The cupcake is a beloved treat that has been around for centuries. Though its exact origins are unknown, we do know that the first known recipe for "cupcakes" was published in 1796. These early cupcakes were more like what we would now call "teacakes," and they were made without butter or eggs. It wasn't until 1828 that a recipe for cupcakes made with butter and eggs was published.

The earliest known mention of the word "cupcake" was in 1884, in an advertisement in the Boston Evening Transcript. The cupcake as we know it began to rise in popularity in the United States during the early 1900s. This can be attributed to several factors, including an increase in available baking ingredients (such as baking powder and standardized cake flour) and an interest in simple recipes that yielded smaller cakes that could be cooked more quickly than large cakes.

Cupcakes really took off during World War II, when rationing made it difficult to bake large cakes. They also became popular at potlucks and church socials, as they were easy to transport and didn't require plates or forks for serving. Today, there are endless variations on the cupcake, from classic chocolate and vanilla to more creative flavors like lavender honey and key lime pie.
