How to Design a Wedding Party Candy Buffet

Design and personalize a candy bar buffet for your wedding or birthday party. Here are a few easy steps that will help you feel a little less overwhelmed and a little more confident about your design.

STEP 1: Candy Buffet Theme
Pick the candy theme for the buffet. Is is best to make you candy theme and color choices based on your wedding's color scheme and theme. For example, if you are having a traditional white wedding with the essence of black you may want to choose mostly white and black colored candy. For a pop of color add just one other bold color that will compliment your wedding color scheme's design.

Other considerations:

• color scheme of the wedding
• take into consideration the way the candies complement or offset the dessert or wedding cake colors and design
• plan the candy buffet in conjunction with the food planning, reception layout and color choices
• consider a centerpiece, such as a chocolate fountain to avoid random mismatch of too many different types of candy

STEP 2: Ordering Candy
A good rule of thumb is to order between .2 and .25 pounds of candy per guest. For an event with 100 guests plan to order a total of 20-25 pounds of candy. 

Other considerations:

• order enough candy so that the buffet seems full and each guest gets a share
• order about 7 to 10 different types of candy, 15-20 pounds for a medium-size wedding
• too many different types of candies is generally not a problem but too few may create the feeling of lack or no variety
• have candy bags on hand for the guests to take the extra candy home and back to their tables

STEP 3: Dietary Concerns
You may want to take into consideration different dietary eating choices. For example, vegan, diabetic and lactose free. If you choose these options think about labeling them as dairy-free, vegan or gluten free. Other guests will still be able to enjoy these special treats but for those with issues with everyday choices they may feel like like put thought and care into the candy choices.

• be sure to label them so that all of the guests are aware
• gluten-free candies for those with gluten intolerance
• vegan/vegetarian candies (no gelatin, no animal derivatives, no dairy, etc.
• sugar-free candies
• consider adding a few dried fruits and nuts for those who do not like candy

STEP 4: Choosing glassware and containers
Many designers use candy containers of varied heights and shapes to display candies.

• match the candy jars with your wedding or party theme, the centerpiece and the quality of items being used for the reception
• don't forget tongs and scoops

STEP 5: Decorating the candy buffet table
Use balloons, ribbons, flowers, and small figurines to decorate your candy buffet and add a little flair.

• use items that pair with your wedding theme and color scheme
• consider adding candles or LED tealights
• add memorable items like photos from your engagement or photos from your youth
• label on the containers of candy
• wrap the containers with ribbon, curling ribbon, and bows
• incorporate your take boxes and bags into your candy display
